This course offers you the chance to learn machine knitting and explore the knitwear design process. It will enable you to experience industry-level resources and understand the creative potential of knitwear design for fashion.


Open to all above 16 years old. No prerequisites.

  • You will receive a solid grounding in basic machine knitting techniques and, according to your level of proficiency, complete your own technical file for your future reference
  • Learn to choose and combine yarns provided by IFM and a variety of materials to create innovative knitted fabrics
  • Understand how to translate your visual research ideas into exciting three-dimensional knits
  • Design and create your own original knitted accessory


This course blends creative experimentation and technical learning

Week 1

  • Experimental giant knitting workshop
  • Technical demonstrations of machine knitting and practical exercises
  • Guided experimentation with yarns, techniques and stitches
  • Demonstration of industrial knitwear programming and knitting
  • Visit to a major Parisian museum for research

Week 2

  • Introduction to methods of finishing and embellishing: linking, needle-punch
  • Learning to translate visual research into knitted fabric
  • Creation and production of a knitted accessory

According to your level of proficiency, you may be able to use other materials such as ribbons, lace trims, raffia, fringes and any light fabrics to finish and embellish your work. You may also mix machine knitting with hand-made crochet or knitting. However, due to time constraints, introductory crochet or hand knitting courses will not be provided during the course.
