Léo Migotti Ramponi, PhD
Cognitive Science
Professor
Areas of research:
- Semantics and pragmatics of non-linguistic representations
- Aesthetics & philosophy of music
- Musical cognition & creative psychology
Léo's work focuses on the application of methods from formal semantics and pragmatics to the analysis of the meaning of non-linguistic objects, notably music, but also dance and, more broadly, gestuality, as well as, more recently, clothing and design. His thesis was devoted to developing a theory of musical semantics by gathering experimental data to establish the reality of semantic effects in music, in order to better understand why some of its properties such as pitch, nuances or timbre evoke certain types of objects or situations.
