New study : The economic weight of fashion in France

#Observatory

Institut Français de la Mode and Quadrat Etudes have carried out a new study aimed at assessing the economic weight of fashion in the French economy.

This study, carried out with the support of the DEFI by Institut Français de la Mode economists, measures the "real" scope of fashion, combining a horizontal approach (all categories concerned: textiles, clothing, footwear, leather goods, watches, jewellery, eyewear, perfumes and cosmetics) and a vertical approach (from design to retail trade, including manufacturing), which allows direct activities to be taken into account, to which are added the indirect effects of these activities on other sectors.

Main lessons learned:

  • The direct turnover of the fashion industry is €154 billion
  • Fashion contributes directly (€37.5 billion) and indirectly (€31.4 billion) to €68.9 billion in added value, i.e. 3.1% of French GDP
  • Fashion contributes directly (616,000) and indirectly (384,000) to 1 million jobs in France
