Conference on 22 January 2019 : Sound and Style, Music in Vogue

"Sound and Style: Music in Vogue" by Mary E. Davis, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology

Institut Français de la Mode will be holding a conference on Tuesday 22 January 2019 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The conference will be held in English.

French in name but American by birth, Vogue has always been a New York-centric magazine with a Parisian point of view. Launched in 1892, it morphed into the glamorous style journal we know today when legendary publisher Conde Nast took the helm in 1909. In Vogue, fashion was the centerpiece of a new transatlantic style; American readers counted on the magazine for guidance on trends in the French capital and depended on its writers and editors for advice on adapting Parisian tastes to American life. By 1920, French women clamored for an edition of their own, and in June that year the first issue of French Vogue appeared on newsstands, with an opening editorial proclaiming "On parle français!".

This talk examines the development of Franco-American style on the glossy pages of both of Vogue’s editions, illuminating the surprising ways in which music and fashion mixed to establish the enduring concept of a New York-Paris style axis.
