Year 2020: consumption of clothing and textiles

Gildas Minvielle

For the year 2020 as a whole, distributors' clothing and textile sales declined by 15.0% in value compared to 2019. In the end, despite the two periods of containment, the year's results were slightly less deteriorated than anticipated.

Online sales were a real growth driver in 2020. More fundamentally, the French have shown an ability to adapt and an astonishing desire to consume in an unfavorable context.

The fact remains that the shock of the year 2020 has been unprecedented, particularly for department stores (-32.3% compared to 2019). Among specialty chains, mass market chains (-9.6%) held up better than accessible luxury chains.
