In just one year, this intensive program allows you to complete your fashion design education by acquiring in-depth knowledge of pattern making. This will give you a dual skill set, which is particularly sought after in today's fashion houses, where the boundaries between the studio and the atelier are increasingly blurred.


Candidates who have followed a complete fashion course in France or abroad with at least a Bachelor's degree and who wish to deepen their knowledge of the design methods and garment construction techniques as practiced in couture and luxury brands.

Program highlights

Pattern Making

You will learn how to fully design a garment with high-end and couture techniques combining draping and flat-cutting techniques.

  • Draping module: tailoring, raglan, kimono, flou
  • Flat cut module: basic construction, transformations and pattern making on skirts, bodices, collars, sleeves, trousers, jackets, linings
  • Digital: mastery of the CLO-3D software through group and individual lessons

Production techniques

You will discover the craftsmanship of assembly, hand and machine techniques, specific to the couture and luxury industry.

  • Specific assembly techniques, hand finishing
  • Specific assembly of the flou (bias, finishes...)

Fashion design / style

You will learn to use one or more creative processes (drawings, models, styling, cutting/gluing, Chinese shadow, creative cutting, etc.) in order to develop a collection.

  • Tailor-made garment module
  • Monochrome module
  • Blurred garment module
  • Textile module


You will have access to Institut Français de la Mode's fablab which will allow you to practice 3D printing, laser cutting, digital embroidery, sublimation printing on fabric, etc. Specific training courses will be offered to you.


An optional 6-month internship will complete your education, giving you additional professional experience in a studio or workshop.

The Intensive Program in Pattern Making and Fashion Design leads to careers such as:

  • Womenswear Design: Assistant Designer, Junior Designer, Designer
  • Creative Pattern Maker, Pattern Maker

Career opportunities

At the end of the programme, three paths are possible:

  • An optional 6-month internship. Examples of companies that regularly take on interns: Balenciaga, Chanel, Carven, Celine, Chloé, Christian Dior, Givenchy, Hermès, Kenzo, Maison Kitsuné, Lanvin, Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Maison Margiela, Nina Ricci, Pierre Hardy, Valentino, Vetements...
  • Pursue higher education at Master level, at IFM by applying for the Master of Arts in Fashion Design, or in other schools in France or abroad
  • Start your professional career directly in a workshop or studio.

  1. Fill in the form and upload your CV, cover letter and corresponding certified certificate of completion, as well as a representative selection from your portfolio.
  2. Following the analysis of your file you will receive an answer by email. If you are selected, you will have to make an appointment by following the instructions specified in the email. During your interview you will need to present your portfolio, pieces of clothing if you have any, or any other element you think it would be useful to present.
